I was tuning in earlier today to the Barack Obama Pre-Inauguration broadcast and thought what better way of celebrating this historic and monumental occasion in American history  than releasing an Obama inspired tea blend?  Now the question was not only what base to begin with, but also what would Obama himself enjoy?

I kicked around a few ideas- maybe a nice Oolong? Or how about a Green tea? ‘Nah’ I thought, ‘It’s gotta be Rooibos‘  So with that as a canvas I tinkered around and came up with a wonderful African Red Bush (rooibos) tea base deeply rooted  with Hawaiian pineapple, coconut and a hint of dry rum.

Hurry on over to our Herbal Infusions Store and pick up your limited edition Aloha Obama loose leaf tea before its gone!

It’s been months in the making but we are finally happy to announce the launch of our newly redesigned website and blog!

Along with the new  and user friendly layout we are also including some great new additions to our loose leaf tea and products.  In addition to our herbal tea blends we will also be offering hand made soap by the slice.  All natural and infused with essential oils these soaps have been a hit with family and friends for a few years now and we have decided to share them with our customers too.  Keep checking back in the coming weeks for additional hand made soaps (once I get the photos complete I’ll be posting them up!)

On the tea fron, our teas have been categorized now as ‘Teas for Health’ and ‘Teas for Life’.  The ‘Life’ series of teas consist of our blends that were on our old website (with a few additions) while the ‘Health’ section features all new blends meant to improve both mind and body.  Here is a quick list of some of the new Health teas for both Mind and Body:

Nursing Tea for Breastfeeding Mommiesa traditional, nourishing tea that helps support healthy breast milk production and is beneficial for the digestive system of both mother and baby

Gimme a Boost ImmuniteaA natural and nourishing black and herbal tea with ingredients that helps to naturally defend your body against colds by boosting your immune system.

Recent Pregnancy vs Caffeine Research

I came across a very good piece on CNN that brought to light the recent research that the Kaiser Institute on caffeine and its effects on pregnancy.  Some of the more interesting highlights:

  • They recommend reducing or eliminating caffeine consumption to a maximum of 6-8 Oz’s/day
  • Caffeine poses a danger to an unborn baby- it adversely affects cellular development and constricts the blood flow to the placenta which can lead to decreased flow to the baby.
  • The study found twice the risk of miscarriage when 200 mg of caffeine was consumed a day (about 2 cups of coffee) compared to non drinkers

There are many alternatives that are both safe and healthy for mommy and child including herbal caffeine free teas.

One such tea is Rooibos, or honey bush tea.  Although not technically a tea (it comes from the African Red Bush) its excellent for pregnant women or those looking to conceive.  Anemia is a common problem during pregnancy and with breastfeeding, and tannin (found in traditional black teas) inhibits your body from absorbing any iron that is contained in the tea.  Rooibos naturally has low levels of tannin and is less likely to interefere with iron absorption.  Research also shows that it can help with nausea and vomiting.
