*Note: This is solely my opinion on aspartame based on personal experiences and research.
Diet Pepsi, Sugar-Free Gum, Low-Calorie Sweeteners. What exactly makes them taste sweet? In most cases the sweetener is a deadly chemical called Aspartame (also known as Equal, NutraSweet, Equal-Measure, etc).
If you are like me then you probably reach for the packets of artificial sweeteners when having that morning tea or coffee at work. It hit me one morning a few years back when I took a look at the packaging…a really good look: “Take only on the advice of a physician”. Woah! Hold on a second- I have to talk to a doctor before downing this stuff??! This piqued my curiosity so I decided to do a little more research into aspartame and WOW did it change my perception of this so called ‘miracle sweetener’.
There have been many scientifically backed studies that have linked aspartame consumption to the following ailments:
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Headaches & Migraines
- Memory Loss
- Brain Tumors
- Insomnia
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Heart Palpitations
- Anxiety attacks
- Joint Pain
- Birth Defects
- Cancer (Brain Cancer)
- Obesity (It actually causes you to crave carbohydrates)
- And a whole laundry list of other problems
So how did Aspartame get such a bad reputation?
Well lets go back to how it was discovered. Back in 1965 James Schlatter, a chemist with the G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug and discovered Aspartame by accident. In the 80’s it was then approved for first dry goods then beverages. And thus started our obsession with the so called miracle low-cal sweetener. (Note: Aspartame was denied by the FDA more than half a dozen times before they finally approved it for consumption.)
So What Exactly is in Aspartame?
Aspartame is comprised of three chemicals: Aspartic Acid (40%), Phenylalanine (50%), and incredibly wood alcohol/methanol (10%) -all labeled in various publications as ‘chemical toxins or poison’. This cocktail of deadly chemicals does a real number on the human body- affecting everything from memory loss (completely counter productive to the inherent properties found in many whole leaf teas) to Parkinson’s disease (see our blog on how to combat Parkinson’s Disease). Some of these ailments are noticeable right away, while others are acute reactions often occurring gradually.
What Are the Alternatives?
Instead of reaching for aspartame/ sweet n low/ sugar twin try using an all natural alternative such as honey. We sell a great assortment of flavored honey sticks at our virtual storefront. (Note: If you have children under 1 years of age see the alternative below as they should not consume honey)
Honey is great because:
- It is nutritious. Honey contains vitamins like B6, niacin, thiamine, minerals, iron, zinc and certain amino acids. Honey is completely safe for pregnant women to consume and can provide these much needed nutrients.
- Has a healthy Glycemic Index (GI). This essentially means that its sugars can be gradually absorbed into the bloodstream resulting in better digestion and higher rate of metabolism (for weight loss and maintenance).
- Energy. Honey is a great source of natural carbohydrates and has been proven to boost natural performance, endurance and reduce muscle fatigue in athletes. Our honey comes in pre sealed sticks which make them perfect for camping, hiking, or any other instance where you need a quick burst of energy to keep you going.
- Cold Fighter. Honey helps to boost your immunity against sickness as it is high in antioxidants. There’s some truth to your mother telling you to drink up a mug of honey lemon tea when you were a kid! Add honey to a cup of green tea for a double shot of antioxidants that will help kick start your immune system faster than I can fall off a horse (and that’s pretty flippin fast – Ask Beth, she has seen it first hand.).
- Love the Skin You’re In. Honey is added to a full spectrum of beauty products including skin care, hair care, tanning lotions, facial scrubs, baby care, and moisturizers. And there is good reason why- honey’s hygroscopic (ability to absorb moisture) properties are ideal for cosmetics because they help alleviate dried skin while rejuvenating.
If you have children that are extremely young it is advised that they do not consume honey as their digestive systems are not developed enough to fend off any spores created by the bacterium naturally found in honey. Agave nectar is a good option that does not spike blood sugar and can be purchased at most health food stores and organic food markets.
The short and sweet of it all: Quit consuming products that contain aspartame. If the above list of symptoms did not make the health concerns associated with aspartame consumption clear enough then consider this- when you ingest products containing aspartame, your body processes it and turns it into formic acid. Essentially formaldehyde… that’s right – the stuff that morticians preserve dead bodies with. So stop pickling yourself! Don’t just take my word for it… Take 20 minutes and do some research, and you will see that the miracle sweetener is anything but a miracle.

I HEART AGAVE NECTAR! its so delicous! and great for vegans and diabetics too. i’m also a big fan of STEVIA. growing it on my deck….
Lets also remember that aspartame and other unnatural and unhealthy sweeteners are in products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, gum and mints. (Toothpaste really freaks me out ’cause they don’t even disclose ingredient lists on the big brands like Colgate and Crest….sketchy!)…. my fave alernatives: Jason sea fresh toothpaste, nature gate anise flavour).
oops i’m not talkin’ about tea. hehe.
Thanks for the comments and recommendations Heather! I had no idea that aspartame is also found in toothpaste- yiiiikes!
It’s very shocking to me how many people consume aspartame on a regualar basis, without considering the consequences. A lot of people I know are well aware of the fact that aspartame is bad for us, but they continue to drink diet pop, and that crystal light stuff which is basically just aspartame and flavour. My family makes a huge effort to avoid aspartame, but it seems to be in everything these days. Is aspartame less expensive in comparison to sugar? Because it seems that a lot of coffee shops use aspartame to make their donuts as apposed to sugar now. It frustrates me a lot. Thank you for writing an article on it to create more awareness!!
I never realised how healthy honey is. I always assumed that since it tastes sweet, it must be kinda bad for you. I’m happy to find out that honey is actually very good for the human body.
Heather… Thanks for the great info! I’ve always wondered about what the heck is in toothpaste. I can’t believe that aspartame is hiding in that too! Uggggh!
The more research we do on aspartame, the more shocked I am about it’s side effects. We originally started to look into it because I was having panic attacks and heart palpitations. I had been to doctor after doctor… I went for an ECG, a Echocardiogram, a Stress Test (That one was the ‘best’ – First they stick IV’s in you and then you get to run with them in, on a treadmill while they monitor your heartbeat/rate and look for problems.) I went through months of these tests trying to figure out what was wrong with me, each one coming back with results that said my heart was in great health.
Then a friend of mine who is a nutritionist asked me if I drank diet soda… SURE! Of COURSE I drank diet soda… I thought, ‘Doesn’t everyone?” She told me that it could be aspartame causing the heart palpitations and the panic attacks… I thought that seemed kind of silly, but stopped drinking soda anyway. Interestingly, I immediately noticed a difference… after a few weeks of no diet soda and reading labels avoiding aspartame… Guess what? No more panic attacks and no more heart fluttering, jumping and pounding. Proof enough for me.
I know that I am not the only one. There are so many people that are negatively affected by aspartame and probably don’t even KNOW that it is the cause of their symptoms. Other symptoms caused by aspartame and not included in Dan’s list above are:
* Hearing Problems – Hearing sensitivity and ‘ringing’ in ears
* Seizures
* Bulging eyes
* Tear duct issues
* Vision loss (especially night vision)
* Numbness of the limbs (This was also happening to me)
* Dizziness and Confusion
* Facial pain
* Peptic Ulcers
* Lupus
* Fibromyalgia
* Attention Deficit Disorder
* Aggressive behaviour
* Addiction to and craving for sweets
* Fluid retention
* Endocrine and metabolic issues
* Loss of hair or hair thinning
* Asthma
* Hives
* Skin Allergies and itchiness
* Increased susceptibility to infection
* Abdominal pain
* Gastrointestinal issues
* Irritability
* Drowsiness and Sleepiness
When Dan said laundry list – He MEANT it. This list could go on and on. It is*so* important to pay attention to your body. We don’t just get headaches and hives for no reason. And popping pills may help the symptom, but it doesn’t solve the problem. It is important to pay close attention to what we consume, and the reactions that we have to these things. If you have any of he above symptoms, just TRY cutting out aspartame for a two week period of time. I bet that it will make a difference for you, like it did for me.
Great article! I stay away from the artificial sweeteners, but mostly by sheer dumb luck. I haven’t done any specific research but just might start Googling it on my lunch breaks at work. Weird words like aspartame are scary… the longer they get, the less I trust them. But honestly, I don’t have a good reason as to why I stayed away from it – maybe because I did not like the taste, it got a lot of bad press, and I really wasn’t concerned about counting calories. I never had a 6-pack or anything, but I was always pretty active growing up… soccer/tennis/baseball, etc. I never got into the diet drinks and grew up on BLACK CHERRY Kool-Aid with lots of sugar, el natural. Life was good back then… all innocent and care-free… running around with red Kool-Aid mustaches… Now I am confined to a cubicle and I don’t think I could pull off the red mustache anymore.
Finally! The best article I’ve seen against aspartame!
At first I felt bad for all my diabetic friends and family (it’s on both sides of my family) because they don’t have many options when it comes to diet approved sugar sweeteners.
But, I started thinking (uh oh!) and realized that Americans are so used to loading everything down with sugar to make their food so sickening sweet, that they panic when they realize that they cannot or should not have sugar. Hence, they will reach for any low-cal sweetener no matter what the consequences because heaven forbid they eat something that isn’t sweet.
It is like the same people who put salt, pepper, hot sauce, etc. on their food before even tasting it (which I think is an insult to the chef)… or the ones who put sweeteners in their tea before even taking a sip of the ‘true brew.’ Don’t do that! Not everything in life has to be sweet in order to be delicious!
I want to tell my story about aspartame to someone. I have been drinking diet pop forever. My skin looked terrible, wrinkles, huge pores awful texture, and terribly dry after menopause. I stopped drinking it about 2 to 3 months ago and all of this is so dramatically improved I just want to tell people. I recently tried a small amount to test it and low and behold within a few hours my skin was getting taut and dry and itchy, and the next day the pores were larger and you get the picture. When you see real results like this kicking a habit of 30 some yrs is NO PROBLEM. I urge you to try it. Especially if your saddened by your aging face.
